Archery lawn sought
The Christchurch Archery Club has applied for planning permission to develop an international archery lawn and ancillary’ facilities at Burwood Hospital. The club said in an application to the town-planning committee of the Waimairi County Council that in recent years it had become more difficult to practise the sport at the club’s present venue, Burwood Park, because of adjacent sports activities. The club has been at Burwood Park for 30 years The club’s vice-president (Mr D., Henshaw) told the committee yesterday that new I
technology had increased bow power, adding to the risk of the present venue. The North Canterbury Hospital Board had some time ago asked the club to provide coaching for patients in the spinal-injury unit at Burwood. Some members of the club were paraplegics. The Hospital Board has put aside 37ha east of the hospital, in Mairehau Road, where the archery lawn could be developed.
The club would need a committee room, a kitchen, toilet facilities, a store room, and a 25m archery range. A building containing
these would be set back from the road and would largely be hidden by existing trees.
The facilities would be used by the archery club, the Air Weapons Club, and spinal injury patients. Some difficulty could be encountered with the development of the ground because it contained about 900 tree stumps. Development would take at least two years.
None of the council’s officers opposed the application. A decision will be made at a meeting of the committee on April 2.
