Top award to D.J.

PA Wellington | A programme presenting factual information on trade ( unions to more than 50 per cent of Tauranga’s popula-| tion has earned Radio Bay. of Plenty this year’s premier Mobil radio award. In Wellington last evening a Radio. Bay of Plenty disc-jockey and presenter of the programme, Wayne Douglas, was awarded the Silver Microphone Trophy, for the best community project on radio.

The programme, “Union Affairs,”-was broadcast last June and, according to audience research, reached 52 per cent of Tauranga listeners.

A total of 63 awards in 14 categories, representing excellence in radio performance and production, were presented at a gala dinner at I Trentham. I

, The Personality of the Year award, non-commercial section, was decided by more than 1500 public votes and this year went to the National Programme’s breakfast personality, Robert Taylor. Pat Courtenay, of 3ZB Christchurch, won the metropolitan section of this award and the provincial section went to Barry Corbett, of 2ZC Napier.

XOther award winners included John Blumsky, of Christchurch, who won the outstanding journalism award for his reports from Antarctica during the DCIO disaster there last year.

Mr Blumsky was also part of another award-winning presentation, Checkpoint’s reports from last year’s National Party conference in Christchurch.' The award was presented to the Checkpoint producer,

Joan Issac, who received it on behalf of the Christchurch political scientist, Professor Keith Jackson; the technical producer, Kevin Newcombe, and John Blumsky, for what the judges called a “tour de force” production. Morning Report’s Peter Sledmere won the best newscaster award while Jessica Weddell won the prize for the best spoken programme .for a daily or weekly series. A special award for outstanding contribution to radio was presented to Barbara Basham, formerly of Radio New Zealand’s special projects section.

The awards were presented by Radio New Zealand in association with Mobil Oil New Zealand, Ltd.
