Pre-season basketball
Lack of interest and enthusiasm among senior teams marked the summer’s pre-season league basketball competition, which finished recently. This was evident in the general attitude of players towards their games and, with ••playerreferees" having to officiate, the over-all standard left a lot to be desired.
The Canterbury Basketball Association will have to reevaluate the running of both the summer (pre-Christmasi and preseason tatter Christmas) competitions, especially for the A grade teams.
Interest, however, remained high, especially in the lower grades, with 90 entries in the summer league and 71 in the preseason league. The pre-season competition in the A grade ended with Y.M.C.A. romping home. 80-52, over Checkers at Cowles Stadium. In the other men's match Burnside defaulted to Mairehau.
Mairehau ran away with the women’s A grade competition, crushing Checkers. 61-18. while Checkers convincingly beat Hotshots, 57-29. Rebels and Mairehau High School had a 36-36 draw. Final points.—Men: Y.M.C.A. and Mairehau 12. Checkers 4. Women: Mairehau A 12, Checkers 8, Rebels 6.
Men’s B grade matches resulted: Hagley 38, Mairehau H.S. 35; Checkers 43, Albion 22; Y.M.C.A. 48, Taxes 12; Seekers 46, Christchurch B.H.S. staff 35. Final points: Y.M.C.A. B and Taxes 12, Checkers and Seekers 8.
