Quiet, weak market
Share prices weakened on small turnover on Australian stock exchanges yesterday as investors waited for. further news bn an oil strike in South Australia, and marked time ahead of the United Kingdom budget. Santos, which made one of the few major gains on Monday, fell 30c to 630 c, lacking fresh news on its Cuttapirrie well. Lease partner, Western Mining, shed 18c to 390 c. B.H.P. fell 30c to 1150 c, A.C.L was up a cent at 203 c, CSR lost 4c to 468 c, T.N.T. was firm at 240 c, and 1.C.1. was steady at 280 c. A decision by the Bank of New South Wales to raise interest rates on housing loans, and interest bearing ' deposits may have dampened some investor enthusiasm. However, most observers blamed a lack of foreign support for the dull and ; easy session. Most interest was diverted to the special boards, which showed a crossing of 1,020,218 shares in Stocks and Holdings at 560 c a share, 14c above the market quote. The parcel represents about 12.3 per cent of the
company’s issued capital, • and this sparked the inevi- ; table takeover rumours. Another late special sale : of 520,000 shares in Oak- ! bridge, at 370 c, was 40c above the market price.
