Mechanic sentenced for assault

PA ?’’ Wellington A man who knocked a traffic officer of his motor-cycle and then assaulted him while he was pinned beneath it was sentenced in the Magistrate's Court at Wellington. Faita Leota, aged 25, a motor mechanic of Lyall Bay. was given six months periodic detention and disqualified from driving for 12 months for assaulting a traffic officer in the execution of his duty.

Mr Graham, S.M., before i sentencing Leota, said that ■ one of the most distasteful i features about Wellington was the number of assaults on traffic officers. “There can be only one penalty for assaulting a law-enforcement officer, imprisonment. “But your counsel has convinced me that you should he allowed to stay in the community,” the Magistrate told Leota. Counsel (Mr N. Hewat) had said Leota was highly’ thought of by’ his employ’er and usually was a man of sober habits.’
