Telstar is the top dog

An 11-year-old Labrador, Telstar Andrea, owned by Bill Streeter of Christchurch, won the premier event, the South Island All Breeds Championship, at the South Island Gundog championships at Waihora at the week-end. It was a narrow victory for Mr Streeter’s dog. She scored a total of 175 points, just a point in front of Teriton Aleda, owned by J. W. Todd (Dunedin). There were entries from as far away as Auckland and Bluff, and it was an Aucklander, Wingfield Fabian, owned by G. Little, which won the South Island Pointer and Setter championship. Labradors dominated both the All Breeds championship and the South Island retriever championship. They took the first five places in the All Breeds event, and the first three in the retriever championship.

The warm conditions on Saturday made scenting difficult for the dogs, but the showery weather at the

championship venue on Sun* day brought improved performances. Results were:
