Parlt to open on May 15

Parliamentary reporter Parliament will open this year on May 15. Phis was announced yesterday by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) and drew immediate criticism by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling).

The date set for the official opening of Parliament clashed with the final day of the Labour Party’s Dominion conference, which this year will be held at the Wellington Town Hall.

Mr Rowling said that the date set by Mr Muldoon was “not only far too late in the year, but deliberately timed, once again, to try to disrupt the Labour Party conference.” .

“This is the fourth vear running that Parliament has been called in the week of the Labour Party conference,” he said. “There is not the slightest constitutional reason for the clash other than a pathetic attempt to try to divert attention from our conference.”
