So in o residents on Avonside Drive, opposed to the Christchurch City Council’s long-standing designation for an expressway along that part of the Avon River, have allowed protest signs to be painted on their fences and garage doors. Others who are not so keen about having to repaint the fence afterwards, have erected billboards and hung banners. One such banner, proclaiming: “Take Sides with Avonside,” has been stolen. Some of the signwriters were approached by a concerned policeman who thought that the protesters were illegally daubing other people’s property. However, once he was convinced they were painting their own fences, he left them to it.
