Refugee-neglect charges probed

Hong Kong An official „ investigation has begun into allegations that. deliberate’ neglect and : mistreatment caused deaths of children and unnecessary suffering in Hong Kong refugee camps, a Government spokesman has said. He said an “internal administrative review” led by a senior Government official was under way as the result of a report submitted by an Australian journalist and author, Derek Maitland, the co-founder of a newspaper for Vietnamese “boat
people” in camps in Hong Kong: * . . Mr Maitland has been campaigning since October for an investigation into allegations that the Hong Kong'Government last summer instituted a policy of deliberate neglect to discourage refugees from making the overcrowded j British colony their target. He said yesterday: “I am’ convinced that intentional ■ neglect led to unnecessary! deaths and unnecessary suffering.” He said that the deliberate withholding of quali. fied medical treatment proved intentional neglect.
