Dioceses get new bishops
PA Wellington The Pope his appointed bishops to two new Roman Catholic dioceses in Hamilton and Palmerston North. This was announced yesterday by Monsignor Christophe Pierre, Charge d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Wellington. The new Bishop of Palmerston North is the Rtv. Peter Cullinane, of the staff of the Church’s National Pastoral Centre at Palmerston North.
Bishop Edward Gaines, who was assistant Bishop of Auckland, was appointed Bishop of Hamilton. The Wellington diocese, previously with 91 parishes, will extend to just north of Levin and Masterton and will still include a sizeable area of the northern South Island with limits at Kaikoura in the east and Reefton and Westport in the west. It-will have 53 parishes and 88,609 parishioners. The Auckland diocese will now contain 63 parishes with with 137,195 parishioners. Hamilton, with 41 parishes, will serve .71,505 parishioners. _______
