Hectic night of emergency calls
Christchurch fire and ambulance services had a hectic night on Saturday answering an “exceptional” number of emergency calls. In the three hours from 9 pin. to midnight, ambulances and fire engines answered several calls from various parts of the city. At 9.20 p.m., both services were called to a motor accident on Kennedys Bush Road, where a car had rolled over and caught fire. : Ai youth, aged 18, and 'a : girl, aged 16, escaped with minor injuries. ■, ' ri; At 9.35 a.m. the fire fescue tender was required to assist in freeing a trapped driver from his car which, .had struck a pole at the junction of Langdons Road and Chapel Street. A man, aged 31, suffered minor injuries. » At 9.44 p.m. two. fire engines were sent to a fire in a fish shop at 235 Linwood Road. The contents 6f a fish fry had overflowed arid, the
resulting fire caused- minor ■ damage. A fire caused by faulty : eletcrical wiring in a car outside a property at 7 Riccar- ' ton Road, was extinguished ’ by two engines just before 10 p.m. At 11.11 p.m. two engines were called to a fire in an outbuilding at the Shirley i Community Centre in Chan- : cellor Street. The fire, which caused moderate damage .'to a wooden store shed, , is being investigated as a case of : suspected arson. ; v \ . An ambulance was called 1 to. a motor accident outside 78 Avonhead Rdad at 11.25 p.m. A boy, aged 15, had suffered minor injuries in a car collision. At 11.45 p.m. a woman with moderate head injuries and two men with minor injuries were taken to hospital after two cars collided at the junction of Chester Street West, and. Park; Terrace. Just before midnight, the emergency fire tender was I required to free three youths
who were trapped in the front seat of a car that struck a tree outside 43 Dal-j lington Terrace, Dallington. The driver, aged 23, was knocked unconscious on impact, and suffered moderate to serious head and internal injuries. A back-seat passenger,. aged 16, was also knocked unconscious and suffered moderate leg and back injuries. The other two youths, who were trapped for about 30 minutes in the front seat, suffered moderate injuries. The- car was extensively damaged. A woman, aged 21, suffered moderate facial and head injuries, and a man, aged 20, suffered minor facial injuries, when their car struck a pole outside 57 Dunbars Road, Halswell, at 2.47 a.m. yesterday. A woman, aged 38, suffered moderate to serious chest injuries when a car struck a ditch on the main Leeston highway, at 7.35 a.m. yesterday.
