Elephant seal in Avon
Christchurch’s 1 elephant seal continues to attract attention as it swims and basks in the lower reaches of the Avon River. About 20 people were seen gathered to look at the sleeping animal yesterday afternoon, on the riverbank near the junction of Lake Terrace Road and New Brighton Road, Burwood.
A senior fisheries officer lof the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Christchurch (Mr K. Ford) said that officers from the Ministry had kept a close watch on the animal’s movements in the river for the last six weeks. He said that the elephant seal was healthy and had not encountered any problems.
