Trolley-bus decision ‘forced by Govt’
PA ' Auckland The Government wants to eliminate trolley, buses to protect its. ihvestrijerit in the huge metlianol .plant to be btiilt in Taranrki, according to a inembbr of the Auckland Regional Authority, Mr B; Tythe. The ' decision : by the A.R.A.’s passenger-transport committee not to; buy a new trolley-bus system Tor Auckland 'had been forced by political pressure, he said; The Government had to ensure - that the methanol produced would be used. It was therefore compelled to provide “financial dis- 1
incentives to a centre as large as Auckland opting for an electricity alternative for transport filelling.” . Tile Government, by refusing to subsidise the overhead wiring, had made electricity such a costly choice that it was able to eliminate trolley buses as a viable bus option. This was d harmful effect of the National Development Act, which wbtild be used initially tb establish the methanol plant. The decision wds also an indication of how the Urban Transport Act could work against areas such as Auckland in the future.
