Court order sought
PA Wellington The fugitive Indonesian student, Mr Jose Satyadharma, is attempting to get a Supreme Court ruling overturning the decision of the Minister of Immigration (Mr Bolger) to expel him from New Zealand.
Mr Satyadharma, aged 35, believes he would be imprisoned for subversive activities if he returned to Indonesia. But his requests for political asylum were refused and he was ordered to. leave New Zealand by February 28.
instead he went ■ into hiding supported by a committee formed by University’ of Canterbury students.
Mr Satyadharma’s lawyer (Mr M. Knowles) said that proceedings had been filed in the "Supreme Court at Christchurch asking for the Minister’s decision to be set aside or declared erroneous. He also seeks a court order giving .Mr Satyadharma permanent residence under the 1951 convention on the status of refugees and an interim order stopping any proceedings against his client as an overstayer. “We hope to get a hearing date for the interim order within a week or two,” Mr Knowles said. ‘The other proceedings may take some time.”
