Pure Steel to clash with Lord Module
NZPA . Sydney Lord Module, the New Zealand and Australian mile record holder, and Australia’s iron horse, Pure Steel, will clash in the opening round of the Inter-Dominion Pacing Championshps at Sydney tomorrow night. Lord Module was a costly failure when he finished towards the back of the Miracle Mile field at Harold.
Park last Friday when a warm favourite. But his owner-driver, Cec. Devine, has accepted blame, conceding that he could have ’ taken a run in the back straight before the champion was blocked. ■ The Wefet Australian pacer, Pure Steel, finished second to Locarno in the "Miracle” and his clash with Lord Module should be the
highlight of? the opening heats. . Pure Steel remains the early • favourite for the $130,000 grand final on Friday, March 28. Lord Module is on the second line. Ted Demmler, the leading Melbourne reinsman, has retained the Pure Steel drive . now that Phil Coulson, of ; Perth, will not make the trip east But the Sydney-trainer • driver, Lawrie Moulds, is ’. standing by for Pure Steel in case Demmler js held up by the petrol strike. y Lord Module and Pure? Steel are in the fourth qualifying division. . Several fancied candidates; fared badly when barrier f draws were made yesterday* for the four 10-horse quali-j fying heats.' . Canis Minor and the Vic-; torian, Dean’s Special, have’;' the second row to contendwith in the opening heats. ? Koala King (second heat)v and Frosty Imp (third heat)*; both prominent in GrandFinal betting, are faced with’ the same problem. The opening heats over' 1960 m are run under free-; for-all conditions and it is l important for runners handi-'’ capped beyond the front in later races to gain maximum; qualifying points. t
This applies to Pure Steel,; Lord Module, Koala King, = Michael Frost and Paleface’ Adios.
Locarno appears to have drawn the weakest division. In the same heat Koala King will start from the inside of the second row.
Further qualifying divi-j sions'will be run on March 5 18 and 21, .with the leading--10 point scores contesting the Grand Final.
