Rhodesian election
Sir, —As you have so rightly pointed out in your leading article (February 29), there will be few who will regard the next few days without apprehension. Such apprehension was also experienced after the Kenyan elections which elevated Jomo Kenyatta, the former dreaded Mau Mau chief, to lead his country, Kenyatta was a strong man and a realistic one, and the country as a , whole prospered. Unfortunately, there appears to be no “Jomo” jn Zimbabwe. Consequently, with intense rivalry between the tribal factions led by Nkomo, Mugabe and Muzorewa, not one of whom is in the Kenyatta mould, it will be a matter of vital concern to all who have kept the country-young. With no one leader likely to gain an outright majority, the leader of the faction gaining more seats than either of the others will need to be a veritable Solomon, to weld a coalition into a government dedicated to the good of all of Zimbabwe.—Yours, etc., L. A. H. BOGREN. . March 1, 1980.
