Huge oil spill
NZPA-Reuter Lagos A blowout at an offshore oil well has sent 30,000 tonnes of crude oil snaking through the islands and channels of the Niger Delta, ruining drinking water and the food supply of thousands of Nigerian fishing people. Many have suffered stomach, eye, and skin problems as - a result of contact with polluted water, according to reports in Lagos. The announcement of Nigeria’s worst pollution disaster, which began with an explosion on January’ 17, was made by r an oil company executive. The spill is estimated, to be half as large as that caused by the wreck of the Torrey Canyon oil tanker in the English Channel in 1967.
