No change wanted in shop hours by retailers
Existing trading hours should remain unchanged, . the Canterbury-Westland Retailers’ Association has decided. The association’s president (Mr T. A. Gyde) said that in ChHstchurch the urban area was covered adequately by five days of shopping between Monday and Friday, with an extra day at New Brighton on Saturdays. “On the wider scene, the lack of population growth coupled with the continued growth of a greater number of retailers and shopping centres clearly indicates that the consumer has increasing opportunities to shop with greater convenience,” said Mr Gyde. ■ ■ “The special needs of shoppers are clearly restricted to a minority of occa- i sions during the year and I retailers could only expect ! to trade profitably on these i rare occasions when high 1 volume turnover could be expected,” he said. ;
