Criticism of policy on access road 'unfair'

If was a little unfair to criticise the Westland National Park Board’s policy on the Franz Josef access road when no firm proposal for the road had been presented to the board by the Ministry of Works and Development, said the board’s chairman (Mr C. S. Christie) yesterday.

Mr Christie was commenting on a report in “The Press” of February 26 which suggested the National Roads Board was unhappy about the board’s policy on the positioning of the road.

The Roads Board was reported as being critical of the park board’s refusal to accept a high road cut through a hillside above the present road. The present road is built on moraine and frequent shingle build-ups mean constant and expensive repair work. The park board last made a decision on the two routes about five years ago. It was “a wee bit unfair” to attack a decision as old as that, said Mr Christie. The board’s present policy preferred reinstatement of the lower road; and the local district roads council had also pushed fo? this option, he said.
