Coal may be major export
Large-scale shipments of Buller coal will be a feature of the Port of Lyttelton exports later this year. The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) announced in December last that New Zealand would release up to 250,000 tonnes of Buller coal anncally, for export to Japan through Lyttelton.
Exports are expected to commence about mid year and Lyttelton, which has the necessary stockpiling and handling facilities, has been granted export rights for the first two years. The first movement of export coal is expected early in. the second quar-
ter of 1980; it will be railed to Lyttelton for stockpiling and shipment. The project is expected to involve the movement of 1000 tonnes of coal each working day. Stockpiling of coal at Lyttelton has been previously undertaken and up to 100,000 tonnes can be catered for at the port north-east of the No. 3 transit shed.
Shipments of up to 50,000 tonnes a vessel would be loaded at Cashin Quay 1 by ship-loader. This facility has been used for the loading of coal, the last shipment being on the Pacific Rose.
