Our parent, which art in heaven...

NZPA ' London The British Council of Churches is urging young people to address their prayers to “parent God” instead of “father God” and to confess to the sin of sexism. In a bpok of prayers and hymns just published for the council, one prayer about sexual equality includes the response: “Parent God, glorify us — each of us made in your image.” Among its petitions it makes the following: “Give us a vision of equality which transcends

that of the human lawmakers. “Free us from prejudice about the roles of the sexes. “Make us aware of what we have done when we deny another’s potential by categorising that person in terms of sex.” Another prayer for parents and children begins: “Teach parents, parent God, the art of allowing their grown-up children to live their own lives.” The book, entitled “Pocket Praise,” is intended for use by young people in most of the main denominations in Britain and Ireland.
