Scott ship to berth at museum

The Discovery, the ship used Captain Robert Falcon Scott on his first Antarctic expedition, has been transferred to Britain’s Maritime Trust. The ve’ssel' — hot to be' confused with the Terra Nova, which- was used during Scott’s ill-fated 1910-12 expedition to reach the South Pole — has hitherto been berthed it ■ London’s Victoria Embankment. The Discovery has been commissioned as a Royal Navy vessel since 1955. The Maritime Trust plans to refit and restore the vessel, and put. her in a permanent dock in London. In co-operation with the National Maritime Museum it is hoped that the Discovery will be opened as a museum of exploration and discovery by 1981, according to a report in the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners newsletter.

A wooden-hulled ship With a triple-expansion engine, the. Discovery was built at Dundee in 1901 for the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. After being used on Scott’s first expedition, she was employed in 1929 as a supplv ship for the joint British-Australian-New Zealand expedition led by Sir Douglas Mawson to the Australian Antarctic territory. She returned to the Thames in 1931 and has been there since.
