Minister quits over cuts
NZPA-Reuter The Hague The Dutch Cabinet failed yesterday to patch up a serious row over public spending cuts which has led the Finance Minister (Mr Frans Andriessen) to offer his resignation. Queen Juliana, cutting short a winter sports holiday in Austria because of the crisis, would fly home today, a Government spokesman said. The Centre-Right Cabinet ended a five-hour emergency session just before 1 a.m. (local time) without reaching agreement, he said. Mr Andriessen tendered his resignation after opposing a Cabinet decision to slash Government spending by a reported three billion guilders ($1570 million), political sources said.
