Arson-man slept on

PA Wellington A drunken man slept overnight in a hotel toilet, blissfully unaware that arsonists were at work trying to burn the hotel down, the police told the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington this week. Joseph Edward Thompson, aged 41, a building contractor, was convicted and discharged for being in “The Pub” in Ghuznee Street, illegally — though not in circumstances that indicated he meant to commit a crime.

Early on Sunday morning, policemen investigating the : second arson attack on the hotel this year, found Thompson aslpep in the men’s toilets Detective-Ser-geant I. Carmichael said. Thompson said that the last thing he could remember was going to the toilet. He had evidently 'had a lot to drink on Saturday night. The police told Mr A. B. Beatson, S.M., that they were satisfied he had nothing to do with the fire. .
