Blakely completes N.Z. skiers’ tale of woe
NZPA Washington Stuart Blakeley, of Christchurch, completed a wipeout for New Zealand skiers in the men’s giant slalom at the Winter Olympics yesterday when he failed to complete the second run.
The two other New Zealand competitors, Scott Kendall (Auckland) and Mark Vryenhoek (Canterbury), were eliminated when they failed to finish the first run.
“It was rather disappointing,” said the team manager, Mr Richard Johnson, “but this is a very technical event, down 395 metres with 56 gates. At this class, you either make it or you don’t.” The event was won by the three-time world
champion, Ingemar Sten* \ mark of Sweden.
