Television New Zealand
Sir, — Combining the two television channels is the first sign of professionalism seen in broadcasting since 1973 When the then Labour Government disregarded the advice of recognised world authorities^and like the amateurs? they were, set us on-a course of poor programming and exorbitant costs. Avalon, with production studios equal to . anything in the world, was built to ensure the best possible multi-channel television , for the whole of New Zealand, acknowledging that it matters little -where a signal is beamed from, so long as reception in the home is. good. Not to use these magnificent facilities to their maximum, and in the way originally planned, is. a public scandal. Surely the appointment of a competent Broadcasting Council, would quickly . regain the formerly recognised high standards of .the old N.Z.8.C., together with debtfree operation, paying its o wn way without resource to higher licence fees or the taxpayer’s purse. —•• Yours, etc., ..
