Open-deck ferry safety concerns
~ Roll-on ferries with open garage decks are potential death traps, according to leading maritime experts, yet they are one of the fastest growing ship types in the world with about 2000 in service. . Concern has reached the point where a committee of the InterGovernmental Maritime Consultative Organisation is studying the matter with a view towards setting up new regulations. The experts who have called attention to the matter claim that the huge, unobstructed garage decks, characteristic of such ships, render them dangerous. They claim that sea .water entering the deck through collision. or other causes, will rush about in a mass and make the vessel capsize-and nose-dive, possibly too quickly ’ for. 3 people aboard to escape to safety. $ ■ si* ' ■ From today the "expected arrivals” and “projected . departures” sections of this column will extend forward 10 days from the day of publication, with one e.xeption.
