Mixed fortunes at the Glen
Fortunes fluctuated at the Woodford Glen speedway on Saturday evening, with no driver making a clean sweep of his class. The nearest any came were Mike Allan, who won two of the three modified sportsmen events, and Tony Cardwell, who shared a win in the super saloon races with Alan Coles and Dave Sangster, but who also won the 12 lap invitation race at the end of tne evening. Coles, driving a Clpbman, did well to keep ahead of the nine much larger saloons in the first super saloons race, and he won by a comfortable 5 seconds. But in race two he began in the middle of the bunch and came off worst in the barging during lap three. The race went to Cardwell, with Sangster, Bolt and Smith in close pursuit. Smith's luck ran out, however, when he broke an axle, forcing him to use his number two car, a Torana, which proved disappointing in later races. Coles received such a battering in the second race that he decided to drop to a lower grade rather than compete in the third super saloon race. This time Dave Sangster was able to hold off Cardwell, while Bolt had a lonelv race in third place, a long wav ahead of Bradley. .• . The Clubman made its appearance in the saloon feature—at the back of 22 cars—but Coles made a mistake, spun on lap four, and put himself out of the running. Only 11 finished the race, and Kevin Moreton emerged the winner by a straight from Peter Edmonds. - ' Suzanne Lamont won the first saloon race, and almost came second in the saloon feature, but spun near the end of the race, for sixth place. . The stock cars played a game of “soccer” using an old. car as a ball, but the teams of five succeeded only In demolishing the car without pushing it between the “goal posts.” ; Results: Super saloons, race one: A.
