Canterbury emerged the champion province chiefly through the efforts of the Lyttelton brigade at the inter-provincial fire-fighting championships at Ashburton on Saturday. Scoring 261 points, Canterbury finished well ahead of West Coast (117). The competition between the two is held every two years. Two invited teams, also took part,
Oamaru and Conical Hill (Otago). Mona Square was the venue, and the 28 brigades competed in nine different disciplines that tested each aspect of their work. The Lyttelton brigade was clearly superior, winning the Westland Shield for most points over-all, the Larcombe Trophy for the lowest _ aggregate times, and eight other prizes. Its coach, Station Officer Robert Kerr, won the Jack Steel Cup. Four hundred visitors attended the competition, and at its conclusion a social evening was held. Guests included the regional fire force commander, Mr B. F. Hyland of Christchurch, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Ashburton, Mr and Mrs G. J. Geering.
