Wheat insurance nearer?
Parliamentary reporter Wheatgrowers appear to have come a step closer to their wish to have insurance cover on their crops in place of the present system of payments by the Wheat Board. A measure of support for the change has been «iven bv the Minister of Trade, and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider) who said that he would seek to have necessary legslation included in this session’s programme if the board and growers could agree on its proposed wording. The intention is that the funds now held by the board, supplemented by further levies on growers, would be used to pay insurance premiums and . pay for any . crop loss or damage caused by a contingency not covered by any insurance policy negotiated by wheatgrowers. Mr Adams-Schneider told a meeting of the Wheat Board that since the funds involved were growers’ money, the growers should be able to decide .on its disposal as long as there were reasonable safeguards on how this was done and that the Wheat Board did not see itself being placed in an invidious position.
