Couldwell wins fine 5000m
By
ROD DEW
The long-striding Com-, monwealth Games steeplechase representative, Martin Couldweli (University), raced awav with the feature 5000 m title in effortless fashion on the final day of the Canterbury track and field championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. Already the holder of the provincial 3000 m steeplechase championship, Couldwell reached the finish far ahead of his nearest rival in the splendid time of 13min 55.15.
Chris Tobin (South Canterbury) claimed the run-ner-up position, drawing ahead of the New Zealand junior champion Peter Renner (New Brighton), oyer the last two laps. Robin recorded 14min 9.25, and Renner 14min 18s. Afterwards, Couldweli was elated. The time was his personal best by almost six seconds, and the win was his ’ first at championship level over 5000 m. It was a particularly fine effort considering he ran the last half of' the race on his own, and augers well for his chances of retaining his New Zealand steeplechase title at: Auckland in a fortnight. Throughout the race, his one object was to break I.4min for the first time. He aimed to ? complete the first eight '.laps in Bmin 565. He was actually a second up on this in the race.' Couldweli ran his last lap in a blistering 59 seconds. The sensation of the fourday championships came with the disqualification for lifting of the experienced international walker, Graham Scatter (Old Boys), in the final 20m of the 5000 m track championship. It was an enormous shock for Scatter, who had crossed the .finish in 20min 40s — -five seconds faster than the New Zealand allcomers record set recently in Auckland by the visiting English walker, Roger Mills. “It surprises me,”' Scatter said later. “I was pushing it all the way to the finish, and yet I thought I was concentrating well. I suppose this sort of thing is-.-always on. New Zealand has, the toughest judging in " the world.” . .. Nevertheless, Scatter was happy'with his performance. “It proves .1 am in the best shape of my life.”, , r Scatter, had lapped .the second finisher, Dr Gardner (South Canterbury), who now unexpectedly finds himself the Canterbury- champion/- t In’the junior. 10km walk, Hamish Riach (Old Boys)
made no mistake, winning in the New Zealand junior record of 50min 17.35. Guy Mayell (Old Boys) and Nevin Taylor (Old Boys) were also close to the old record standard of 52min in claiming che minor places.
For' the third year in succession the first two placings in the 800 m final were the same, and once again it was Richard Goldstone (Old Boys) who had to settle for second place.
The final was won in fine style by Andrew Stark (University) in the excellent 'time of Imin 48.85. He now has the distinction of holding both the 800 and 1500 m titles. Goldstone, very unlucky not to win last summer, this time finished a mere half a stride behind in another very close finish. His time was Imin 49.35. Third place went to the visiting British representative, Chris Sly (Old Boys), in Imin 50.45.
Erin Baker (New Brighton) won the women’s 800 m in 2min 13.35. after a keen tussle with Rosey Burn (Old Boys) and Andrea Wilson (University). But. -the outstanding effort in the women’s middle distance events came from 15-year-old Susan Bruce (New Brighton)/ -7 She won . the girls’ under 16 800ni'title in 2min 11.55, a time; which broke the Canterbury under 16 and under 18 records, and which bettered the senior championship winning time of Miss Baker. ' Two other Canterbury records. fell yesterday. Michael Gilchrist (Technical) won the junior 1500 m title in the very impressive time of 3min-.47.45, and his .’club’* mate, Douglas Binnie,: won the under 16 title in' 4min 10.35. Angela .Pule (New Brighton), winner of the senior vvomen’s high jump, title last week, was below her best -in the under TB'''championship,• She and Elizabeth Timblick (Geraldine) both cleared 1.65 m, but. thS'ltitle went to Miss Timblick.-on . a countback. '■■■■ . .
However, Miss Pule, aged 15, could still be well satisfied with her effort. She won five championships on the first two days, and yesterday brought her tally to seven with wins in the under 16 100 and 200 m finals.
Terry Lomax (Old Boys), holder of the New Zealand championship, had a hard time in the senior men’s high jump. He cleared 2.04 m, a height normally good enough for a comfortable win. but this was matched by Kieran McKee
(Toe H) with a ■ career-best jump. Lomax only won the title on a countback. McKee had his moment of glory in the pole vault, defeating the reigning national champion, Mike Ritchie (Toe H), by 10cm. McKee cleared 4.70 m, just 2cm short of the national record he set last month. Mary O’Connor (University) comfortably won the women’s 5000 m title on Saturday in 16min 59.45, adding it to the 3000 m crown she had won previously. Two of the best known competitors, Vai Young (Technical) and Mene Mene (Technical), both completed jtheir championship doubles with impressive performances. Mrs Young . retained the women’s shot title with 14.02 m, and Mene won the men’s shot with 13.87 m. Abbreviations used in the following results of the Canterbury athletic championships are:—’
