Charges after raid on shop
Seven young people were
arrested by the Nelson police on Saturday after a. smash and grab raid on a Richmond jewellery store.
A stone was thrown through the display window of Saunders Jewellery shop in Queen Street, Richmond, about 3 a.m. Six watches and a calculator were later found to have been taken. In breaking the window the culprits activated a burglar alarm, drawing attention to a car leaving the scene. A description of the car led the police to a group of young people who were questioned and later arrested. The police' later learnt of four other premises broken into during the night. Soft drinks and sweets were taken from Kooky Takeaways. Bolt Road Tahunanui, and from the Black Orchid Dairy, Richmond, which with a land agency were entered before the smash and grab raid. Five crates of beer were also stolen from the cool store of the Star and Garter Hotel, Richmond. They were not recovered. Six of those arrested will appear in the Magistrate’s Court at Nelson this morning, and one will appear in the Children and Young Persons Court, on charges of bu rglaiy. .
