Aust, bowls dominance
PA Palmerston North New Zealand bowls received a slap in the face yesterday when two Australians, Rob Parrella (Brisbane) and Allan Horsfall (Wollongong), battled out the final of the top New Zealand singles men’s bowls tournament, the Lion Masters, in Palmerston North. Parrella, scrambled home against last year’s winner, Horsfall, 31-28, after dominating the final through its
early and middle stages, and starting to lose his grip later on.
The all-Australian final came about when Horsfall came from well behind to beat Wayne Sellars (Northern), 31-25, and Parrella easily accounted for the New Zealand singles champion, John Murtagh (Paritutu), 3114.
There was some consolation for New Zealand bowlers in the final of the
Lion Masters plate, where Phil Skoglund (Northern) staged an incredible comeback to beat Peter Beiliss (Aramoho) 31-30, after being behind 21-30. Results:— Masters ; Semi-finals. —Horsfall 31, Sellars 25; Parella 31, Murtagh 14. Final.—Parella 31, Horsfall 28. Plate; • ■ ■
