Coney, Chatfield set Wellington on course for victory
PA Wellington A yell of pain from the Wellington batsman, Jeremy Coney, signified a sudden change in the tense last minutes of the thrilling match against the West Indies at the Hutt Recreation Ground yesterday.
After Laing on the better end of a decision for a caught-behind appeal before he had scored, Coney battled on against the tight attack on the wearing pitch and carefully ground out priceless runs. Suddenly, a ball from Joel Garner reared and smacked the right-hander on his right forefinger — the same finger which was damaged in last week’s test. From there, Coney seemed to take the o ame to the tourists and w?..i John Morrison guided th" side to a position where a win looks more than just possible todayAfter Ewen Chatfield had again done wonders with the ball to take seven for 53, the West Indies were humbled for the second time in the match to be all out for 143. Needing 153 to win, Wellington lost three wickets in reaching 114 at stumps. Coney - survived a chance when 38 as the wicket-keep-er, David Murray, dived to his right but spilled the catch. But as his innings grew his confidence kept pace and en; yin- the luxury of a = loose over from Derek Parry, raced to his 50 in 105 minutes, from 78 balls. As the record crowd of 10,000 rose to their hero, it was significant none of the touring team applauded . —, a legacy of the turned down appeal 50 runs earlier. Robert Vance left after the bruising, patient 21. He was frequently beaten, particularly by Garner, but he stayed through a vital period and looked distinctly unlucky to be given out caught behind.
When the West Indies resumed from its overnight total of 6 for none there was a totally different attitude. present. From the start, Desmond Haynes began hitting out, and he did the job well, ending with 58 before being caught brilliantly by Vance behind the stumps. But there the newly adopted attitur ? ended. The almost careless batting reemerged and some of the world’s top batsmen fell to shots many schoolboys would already have rejected from their repertoire. Two of the “guns,” Lawrence Rowe and Kallicharran, were well beaten and bowled by Chatfield, while most of the others went to pO fpllpc Chatfield had match figures of 13 f-. 86 and deserved the standing ovation as he led the Wellington team from the field. From Wellington’s point of view, the longer Coney and Morrison can stay at the crease this morning, the better. Those 39 runs won’t be come by easily as the tourists showed at Dunedin.
