Taylors Mistake in winning form

From the first event of the dav. there was no doubt that Ta’vlors Mistake would prove itself, by a large margin, Canterbury’s premier surf lifesaving club. On the club’s home beach in yesterday’s Schweppes-3ZB carnival, Taylors Mistake took firm control of the “K Day” and surged away to a handsome peninant championship victory. Taylors Mistake uliimately gained 275 points, giving it a winning margin of 83 over South Brighton, and another six clear of New Brighton. While Taylors Mistake’s seniors took an overwhelming share of the points, its juniors played a full part with their 92J points, second only to New Brighton. The senior surf relay which kicked off the programme sent Taylors Mistake on its winning way. Geoff Walker secured the early lead. Carl Immers developed on that, Daryl Neate lost just a shade, but David Conder came through on a wave to take 20 seconds out of Waimairi’s Steve Johnston for the victory. So it went for Taylors Mistake, the senior canoeists again taking the double of race and rescue, Immers handsomely retaining his tube rescue title, Jamie Clark (junior) and Walker (senior) winning their respective ski races, and Walker the surf race as well, and the drill-men again playing a full part. In the women’s surf relay, after a fluctuating event, Lynette Griffiths (New Brighton) and Janice Murdoch (Waimairi) pounded up the beach together, and while no-one would have queried a dead-heat, it was Griffiths in front by a nose. There was. an equally memorable finish to the junior relay, Robert Lee taking the water as South Brighton’s last swimmer, 15 seconds clear of Lachie Marshall (New Brighton), but having to concede best to the gutsy final swim of Marshall. Marshall also upset the favourite, Chris Ellis (Waikuku Beach) in the junior surf race, and was John Koens’s patient in his retention of the tube rescue title. Jill Clarke suffered the second surf race defeat of her career, when Tracy Turnbull (Waikuku Beach) finished handsomely ahead, and Jo Barker (South Brighton) also pushed North Beach’s Clarke out of second place. , , Just as Taylors Mistake had the senior canoes to themselves, so New Brighton’s juniors were completely dominant in the two events, winning the canoe racecanoe rescue double by good margins. The final breakdown of points was:— Senior.— Taylors Mistake, 1821,
