Lower Waitaki project in 1990?
PA Timaru Construction of a lower Waitaki power project may start in 1990 with the first station working by April, 1995, according to the Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy. “If the National Development Act is invoked, the tenders for the first dam might be called as early as 1984,” said the Waitaki Valley Acclimatisation Society’s secretary, Mr A. J. Brady, when the Electricity Division’s timetable was read to a meeting at Waimate. The separate power canal is favoured at present, and the formation of a design group is set for July this year. One scheme would have to be distributed to concerned groups for reaction by 198283, said Mr Galloway, of the Ministry's Power Division.. A decision would be taken on the wav to proceed by 1985-86. An environmental assessment and water rights application would be prepared, and' town-planning designation would be applied for, he said.
