Canty chasing softball title
With the former New Zealand pitcher, Cheryl Kemp, as coach and the undoubted boost of a home crowd, Canterbury will not be lacking drive for the national women’s under-21 softball tournament which begins at Porritt Park on Monday. This is the fourth year the Hertz-sponsored -tournament has been held, and the first time in the South Island. Competition will consist of a round-robin between the eight teams for the first three days and on the las-t day they will split into a top four and ’ ottom four, playing for the Price Cup and Hertz Trophy respectively. Canterbury will have Caroline Rennie pitching to the talented young New Zeland catcher, Penny Salton. The other infielders will be Suzanne McLean, Sharon Mansfield, Bernadette Straker, Chris Timms (captain) and Jane Earnshaw. Patrolling the outfield will be Anthea Feaver, Viv Jardine, Chris John, Janine Gould and Therese O’Rourke. The favourite is likely to be the strong Auckland side which has won each of the previous tournamen-ts. The team’s outstanding player is Deslea Wrathall (an outfielder), chosen last month to represent New Zealand in Australia this April. Robyn
Rutter, Rita Fatialofa, Venita Hokai, and Mary Mouton are other players in the side with a lot of national tournament experience. Counties also has an experienced line-up with Rosie Ah Wong and Tina Rhind the players to watch, while Hawke’s Bay will benefit from the experience of its coach, Jan Foote, who caught for New Zealand at three world series. Hu-t’t Valley has a very strong team with many players included who played in the Rothmans national tournament last month. Eti Vole, the New Zealand pitcher, will back up Hora Mangu on the mound. The other teams taking part are Southland, West Coast and the Bay of Plenty. At the conclusion of the championships, Mr Harry Atkin will name a New Zealand tournament team. Play-, er of the day and outstanding player of the tournament awards have been donated by Conley and Bly-ih. Monday’s draw is:— Auckland v. Southland, Hawke’s Bay v. West Coast, 10.30 a.m.;.
