Opening batsmen, Greenidge and Haynes, demolish Central’s bowling
PA New Plymouth The West Indies opening batsmen, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, made mincemeat of the Central Districts bowling to win a one-day cricket match at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth yesterday.
Greerfidge and Haynes hit 132 runs between them to head off the Central . Districts score of 130. Greenidge finished with 64, and Haynes 62. The West Indies won by 10, wickets — a heartening victory after -their defeat at Dunedin. The West Indies’ top fast bowler, Andy Roberts, took four wickets before further strain on the hamstring injury that hep. him out of the first: test. It was r t considered too serious and should not keep him out of consideration for the second test, starting it Christchurch next Friday. Roberts also won the Man of the Match award yesterday. He and Collis King obliterated the Central Districts middle-order batting, at one stare taking six wickets for five runs, including three ducks. Central Districts, given a useful start of 99 by Andrew Jones, Mathew Toynbee and Jock Edwards, were staggering at 104 for nine. It complete!'” battered the innings and only a fighting 23 by the Central Districts captain. David O’Sullivan, in a last-wicket partnership, boosted the total enough to make a reasonable target for the West Indies. But' Greenidge and Haynes weren’t prepared to waste time. Their target rate was
: three an over and after i maintaining that for most of the time they finally, launched into attack and ended the match with almost contemptuous ease after only 33 of the scheduled 45 overs. Neither Greenidge nor Haynes .took unnecessary chances. They waited for the right ball to hit, Greenidge, in particular, hitting with tremendous power. Most of the runs came in boundaries despite the slow outfield, which had been drenched' the day before. Their ability to pick the gaps in Central’s field was another fac’-r and on several occasions the ball whizzed past the fieldsmen before they could move to stop it. • • . Greenidge hit 11 fours and a six, and Haynes hit 11 fours. There was only one chance off Haynes, when he was 45. He hooked Michael Gill high and Alistar Jordon, who ran 25 meters to get under the ball, dropped the catch. The outstanding fieldsman for Central was Gary Langridge who made many fine saves in the covers. The West Indies produced their own star in the field when the wicketkeeper, David Murray, figured in six dismissals — six catches and a stumping. Murray’s catch to dismiss
Edwards was a long dive to his right from the bowling of Roberts. Edwards, Toynbee and Jones were the best Central batsmen. Edwards, the hero of the Pukeura Park crowd, pulled the first ball he received from Parry for four. He added another five boundaries with strong drives. But Deryck Murray soon had Roberts back into attack and Edwards, trying to drive, go-t an edge back to the wicket-keeper. CENTRAL DISTRICTS R. Pierce c Murray b Roberts 3 A.
