The positions are full-time ones, but a maximal part-time (79/10ths) basis could be negotiated. The duties are those of a general physician, but the successful applicants may have, or develop a special interest. Respiratory diseases/ rheumatology, gastroenterology, renal medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, alcoholism would be desirable, but other areas of special interest would be considered. Interest in cariology, neurology and haematology and oncology would be allied with present physicians. The Southland Hospital serves a population of 120,000 in the southern area of the South Island. It is sited in the city of Invercargill, population 50,000. Southland has a rich farming hinterland, bordered by the beautiful Southern Lakes-Fiordland area, which is a popular .recreational and sporting area.
