Closing unlikely
High Street businessmen who want to close their shopping street to all traffic for a Maypole Market Day this month or in March might get little official support.
The Christchurch Transport Board - has objected strongly to a disruption of its bus' routes, and members of the City Council’s works and traffic committee yesterday were not keen on having any closings. “I like the idea,” said the chairman (Cr Newton Dodge) “but I think it might be a bit much for a whole week.” The Transport Board’s
general manager (Mr M. C. Taylor) said that the diversion of all bus services — other than the City Clipper — from High Street was being studied to allow for the future Cashel-High Street pedestrian mall. Those changes were “surprisingly far-reaching, and are not the sort of thing that can be switched on and off at a few days notice,” he told the council in a letter.
A street closing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for one day, to vehicles other than buses, will be suggested to the businessmen.
