Poor sale for goats

The law of supply and demand worked against vendors at yesterday’s auction of Angora goats at the Addington Show Grounds. Prices were disappointing; of the 274 offered only 119 were sold at an average of $444. Sales totalled $52,858 compared with $230,000 for 111 Angoras sold last year. Although some good prices were paid — up to $2200 for bucks and $2OOO for does — observers said the market would have been much better if the entries had not over-saturated the market. Last year’s top prices were $lO,OOO for a buck and $B4OO for a doe.

Some vendors from North Island centres, faced with the prospect of returning their stock home, preferred

to accept prices less than the reserve. This had a marked influence on the sale and caused a big drop in the average price. Purebred does had the best sale, averaging $1209 a head. However, only 16 of the 40 offered were sold. The top price of $2OOO was paid by H. Steele (Timaru) for a doe offered by the Whenua Stud, Outram.

M. Day (Winton) paid $lBOO for a doe from Southern Angoras (Mossbum) and $l5OO was paid for a doe from Seaview Downs (Sefton) and $l5OO was also paid for an entry from Rippon Farm (Wanaka). Purebred bucks averaged $lO6O, 19 of - the 57 offered being sold. Top price of $2200 was paid by Spruce

Grove Angora Stud (Arrowtown) for a buck from Alba Angora (Culverden). The other top price was $l9OO for a buck from Tawhero Angoras (Eketahuna), which went to H. Rutherford (Hawarden). Tawhero Angoras also sold bucks 'for $l5OO and $l6OO.

Third cross (B grade) does averaged $545 for the 11 sold from an offering of 21. Second cross (C grade) does average $l5B. Of the 27 offered, buyers were found for 20. Only 16 C grade bucks were offered, and four were sold.

Passings were common in the section for first cross (D grade) does. Only 41 of the 102 offered were sold for an average of $7l.
