Books on life in Japan for N.Z.
Wellington reporter
About 160 books on many aspects of life in Japan were pledged to New Zealand by the Japanese Prime Minister (Mr Ohira) during his repent visit, and are'expected to arrive at Victoria University of Wellington late next month.
I The books will be given to New Zealand by the Japan Foundation, an organisation set up to promote cultural exchanges and visits to foster overseas understanding of Japan. Japanese dictionaries, statistical works, books on ■Japanese history, geography, religion, economics, political system, and language, and 60 books on Japanese art and literature are included. All the books are in English.
Mr Ohira’s role was simply to hand over a portfolio of the titles. The Japanese Government will also give Auckland and Wellington 200 examples of one of Japan’s most cherished symbols, the cherry tree, reports the Press Association.
Each city will receive 100 trees.
I They will be presented to the Mayors of Auckland and Wellington, according to the Japanese Embassy in Wellington. However, the trees are unsuited to planting in January, so the presentation and planting of the first trees will not occur until later in the year.
