Auckland leads cricket

Trudy Anderson (Auckland) and Lynley Patterson (North Shore) with 60 not out and 59 not out respectively were the top scorers in the first round of the National Women’s Second Eleven cricket tournament at Logan Park, Dunedin. . The Otago Blue team failed to hold out in its second Innings against Auckland. Bowling for Auckland. Trudy Anderson took five for 18 and the captain, Noeline Scholium took four for nine from her seven overs, In the Canterbury-Wellington match, Canterbury left itself a little short of time to dismiss Wellington and finished the match with three points from a first innings lead. Manawatu also collected only three points after its draw with Wanganui. North Shore’s out-

right win against Otago Gold gave it 10 points to lead Pool Auckland, also with 10 points, leads Pool A. Results:— Pool A Canterbury 165 for three (S. Russell 63, S. Storey 39) and 78 for- two (S. Storey 41 not out), drew with Wellington 92 for eight (H. Swetman 21, S. Horsley 20, D. Baker 20; S. Harris three for 28, P. Patterson four for 25) and 68 for one (M. Thompson 25, S. Horsley 23). Otago 87 for Ave (R. Harrex 22, P. Ryan 21 not out; P. Southern three for 19), an d 45 (J. Gill 13; T. Anderson five for 18, N. Scholium four for nine). Lost outright to Auckland 156 for six (T. Anderson 60 not out, P. Southern 38 not out; M. Smith four for 33)

and 90 for four (T- Anderson 24, P. Southern 24 not out). Taranaki had the bye. Pool B Otago Gold 19 and 36 (J. Tremain five for four, L'. Woods three for one), lost outright to North Shore, 91 for one declared (L. Patterson 59 not out)). Manawatu 92 for four (L. Simpson 31, K. Leighton 19; S. Groves three for 55) and 69 for seven (L. Simpson 36), drew with Wanganui 65 (S. Groves 15; L. Marshall three for eight; M. Patel three for 12). Canterbury 2 had the bye. The draw for today’s matches, which will begin at' 10 a.m., is: Pool A: Wellington v. Otago, Auckland v. Taranaki, Canterbury a bye. Pool B: North Shore v. Wanganui, Manawatu v. Canterbury 2, Otago Gold a bye.
