‘Breaking Away’ critics’ choice
NZPA-Reuter New York. The United States National Society of Tilm Critics has named “Breaking Away” as the best United States film of 1979. The society, composed of 35 film critics from national publications, named Dustin Hoffman best actor for his roles in both “Kramer vs. Kramer” and "Agatha,” and picked Sally Field as best actress for her performance in the title role of “Norma Rae.” The best-director award went in a tie to Woody Allen for “Manhattan”- and
Robert Benton for "Kramer vs. Kramer.”
The award for best supporting actor went to Frederic Forrest for “Apocalypse Now” and “The Rose,” and Meryl Streep won the best supporting-actress award for three roles — in “Manhattan,” “The Seduction of Joe Tynan,” and “Kramer vs. Kramer.”
“Breaking Away” also won Steve Tesich the bestscreenplay award, and Caleb Deschanel was named best cinematographer for . “The Black Stallion” and “Being There.”
