Kaikoura battered

A southerly gale, gusting up to 70 knots, disrupted power and telephone circuits in the Kaikoura district on Wednesday night and damaged caravans, tents, and boats along the Kaikoura coastline. The storm struck soon after midnight. Power was off in the township from soon after. 1 a.m. until 2 p.m. yesterday. The break was caused by high winds damaging the main transmission line south of Cheviot. North Canterbury Electric Power Board linemen said yesterday that there were probably other faults in the county which could

not be checked until power had been restored. Two caravans were overturned at the Omihi camp on the south coast of Kaikoura. Numerous caravans lost' their awnings and tents were blown down at Keikei and Puketa in the 1 Kaikoura Coastal Reserves Board camping area. There was no report of injuries. At South Bay, a 3m fishing boat broke in half when it was swept off a slipway by heavy seas. Many dinghies were damaged by the heavy seas after being left on the beach overnight. The inland road to' Kaikoura was still closed last night.
