Thiess coal exports increasing
NZPA Brisbane • Thiess Holdings, Ltd, has announced a . major coal export drive. Increased sales of blending and steaming coal have been made possible by an expansion programme to lift the production capacity of the company's South Blackwater mine, in Queensland, to two million tonnes a year. The chief executive of Thiess (Mr N. Fussell) said that the company had negotiated the supply of 100,000 ' tonnes of blending coal to Japan between April this year and March, 1981. The deal, which was subject to Australian Government approval, was expected to lead to further exports to Japan as production continued to rise. A trial shipment of 10,000 tonnes of blending coal had also been arranged with Pohang Iron and Steel Corp? oration, of South Korea. This could lead to further shipments if testing results were satisfactory. The expansion at the South Blackwater mine, which includes the installation of two new giant draglines, boosted deliveries of coking coal to the Japanese steel mills from 919,000 tonnes in 1977-78 to 1,055,000 tonnes in 1978-79.
