i i NZPA-Reuter Cambridge (Massachusetts) ; i .Scientists have reported that they have discovered a method ' to , grow . large amounts of human skin under laboratory 7 conditions. The new skin may eventually be used as grafts to replace damaged skin, I according to scientists at the ■Massachusetts Institute of 'Technology. ( A biologist, -Howard 'Green, said samples ’of the ; laboratory-grown human (skin cells had been imiplanted in mice and had (grown well. The mice were 'first treated so they would I not reject foreign materials. ' “So far as the culture side is concerned the problem is (solved,” he said. “We could grow large amounts of this (skin if it proves useful for human patients.” Dr Green, who heads the team of M.I.T. scientists, said an injured person’s own cells could be grown into large pieces of tissue within about five weeks. This tissue could then be grafted to cover a severe burn or other injury. •''T-
