Quebec fire toll now 44
NZPA-Reuter Quebec ' The death toll from a fire at a New Year’s Eve party ‘in Chapais, Quebec, rose to 44 yesterday when two of those injured in the blaze ‘died at a Quebec City hospital. • ■ , None of the victims identities was made public. A mass funeral for those who died in the blaze at the Opemiska Club will be held at a municipal arena touay; A police spokesman said Florent Cantin, aged 21, a resident of this northern Quebec mining town of 3500 people, had appeared before the Quebec Fire Commissioner in a closed session before being transferred to a prison near Quebec City. Cantin,, held since New Year’s Day as a material witness, remained in custody on a coroner’s warrant.
