New Zealand both won and lost junior international water polo series at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. The home under-18 team clinched the series • with South Australia with a slowpaced, 4-2, victory in the second of the three matches in the morning. The victory was virtually assured by half-time, but it almost frittered away that advantage in the final half. Indeed, with less than Umin remaining, South Aus-

tralia had closed to 2-3. But a goal on the stroke of a time-wasting call by the New Zealand captain, John Koens, put his team beyond reach. New Zealand’s other goals were scored by Mark Grooby (2) and Chris Jarvis. For South Australia, Tony Kenihan scored both goals. But New Zealand lost the second of the secondary tschoolboys’ matches to Aus tralia, 4-5 the same result as the first match. .

As in that game, Australia had a dynamic second quarter, scoring three goals and going into a 4-2 lead. Though New Zealand had the better of the second half, it could not quite close the E a P- ... , Austrahas goals were scored by Alan Gertie (2), Chris Mackay, Ron Morelli and Mark Sydney. Jarvis (2), Stuart Watson and Lachie Marshall scored New Zealand’s goals.
