A Christchurch climber has minor lacerations and is reported in a satisfactory condition in the Grey Hospital after falling 120 metres (400 ft from the top of the Copland Pass in the

Southern Alps yesterday morning. He is Michael John Butler, aged 21, of 21 Gladson Avenue, Upper Riccarton. According to Constable A. J. Perry, of Whataroa, Mr Butler fell on to a snow and rock face. He was

climbing with a party of six or eight others when the accident occurred. One of the party returned to the Douglas Rock Hut and at 2 p.m. advised the Westland National Park Board rangers of the mishap. A helicopter was called

and Dr K. Daynes, of Whataroa. was flown into the area. He returned with Mr Butler to Fox Glacier, where because of suspected head injuries he was transferred to a winged aircraft for the flight to Greymouth.
